For Your Industry
Information Technology
Good examples of eligible work involve problems with encryption, compression, algorithms, logic, performance & quality issues, incompatibility issues, bleeding-edge state-of-the art IT, combinations of media types, and more.
If you're not sure if your work is eligible, talk to the experts at SRED Consulting Group.
Manufacturing
When making a claim in a manufacturing category, the claimant must understand the concept of "standard practice". The actual term has been removed from the CRA glossary, as it led to much confusion, but the concept is still alive and well. Instead of "standard practice", a CRA reviewer may refer to the "application of known methods". It might seem to the claimant that CRA uses this term with such broad application that it is virtually impossible to demonstrate any advancement in technology.
Life Sciences & Biotechnology
There are many different categories of claims that are related to medicine: development of natural health products and pharmaceutical products, clinical trials, and medical research done by incorporated doctors.
Projects that involve clinical trials may be straightforward, ... or not. Many clinical trials involve multiple parties (i.e. corporate entities), and sometimes projects involve international parties. It's necessary to understand Intellectual Property rights as they pertain to SR&ED in order to establish who is eligible to claim SR&ED credits in Canada.
Food & Beverages
For food claims, you'll want to make sure that you don't represent your projects as mere recipe development or new cooking methods. CRA likes to trivialize food claims, even though there's real science behind food formulations, and the category clearly exists. There are growing trends in non GMO food formulations, a variety of common additives, gluten-free, low-sodium, low-calorie, and other popular trends that create technological obstacles for food manufacturers.
Others
There are so many eligible industries and areas of science, it's hard to count.
Look here for the list of officially recognized technology and science codes.
In all cases, you need to establish that your company has faced technological obstacles or scientific uncertainties. Then you need to establish that you have achieved (or attempted to achieve) an advancement in knowledge in science or technology, via systematic investigation.
SRED Consulting Group qualified technical and financial Consultants can help you identify and document all the stringent requirements of CRA, and get you the maximum credits from CRA.
